“Shalom, shalom,” they shouted, as Mary and Joseph trudged wearily through the cramped narrow streets. “Barukh haba! Welcome!” Joseph knew God’s appointed Feasts were about to start, and homes would soon be filled with guests. “Does anyone have a spare room?” he asked, as the villagers peered through their windows to see what the fuss was about. The villagers were curious, and Joseph soon found a family to stay with. Their guest room was full, so they made a bed for Joseph and Mary in the living room near the animals. Mary smiled and rubbed her stomach. The baby was due soon, and she was grateful for somewhere to stay. She sat in the courtyard, watching the women bake bread over the crackling fire. It was nearly the Day of Trumpets and the villagers had plenty to do. Mary could feel the excitement in the air.
